U. of Missouri Says Classroom Photo of Obama Violates Ban on Political Advocacy

A group of students at the University of Missouri at St. Louis is protesting the removal of a photo of Barack Obama from a classroom poster, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch . The poster is one of about six created for a “character education” project in an introduction-to-teaching class. The students who included Mr. Obama’s picture said they intended to highlight the Democratic presidential candidate as an example of a good role model and leader, not to make a political statement.

Promoting a Culture of Reading in Kenya

I returned from Kenya over a month ago and am still reflecting on the conversations that I had there with teachers, students, administrators, and officials at the Kenya Institute of Education. There’s so much to think about and digest. The one thing, however, that I have been thinking about ever since I came back is [...]

Christchurch, New Zealand So we’re all in New Zealand, having survived almost exactly 24 hours of non-stop travel from Philly to Christchurch, and already it’s as beautiful as advertised. We left leaves drifting into the gutter at home for freshly blossoming trees and flowers, and it’s just wild how everything, weather, time, etc. gets literally turned [...] SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Reading Through Games (and Passions)", url: "http://weblogg-ed.com/2008/reading-through-games-and-passions/" });

A number of folks I’ve bumped into lately ask me why I stopped blogging. I haven’t. I simply can’t maintain both of my blogs, work, travel, and have a life. So, while I may continue to post in this blog occasionally, I have an obligation to post on SLJ space. So please, please link to NeverEnding [...]

Extending and Expanding the Conference Experience

Laura D’Elia was in Boston a couple of weeks ago attending the Building Learning Communities Conference and she’s put together a VoiceThread presentation that she’s going to present to her colleagues. And the cool thing is that she’s invited some of the BLC folk to add their own voices to the presentation. What a concept, huh? [...]

How knowledgeable do I have to be with computers in order to take an online course?

Most online courses use software similar to email software. If you are familiar with using email and a word processor then you would be comfortable with taking an online course.

An online course is accessible to students over the internet without the students having to download or specially install software locally on their own computer.

Online courses do require students to have internet access (word processor software too). How long a student spends logged in to an online course varies from student to student and course to course.

What is an online course?

An online course is a course offered by a college or university (or any learning institution) which is conducted entirely over the computer (online) without requiring that the physical presence of the student in a conventional classroom.

Online courses usually provide access for students to interact with other students who are taking the same course, thus introducing the concept of the ‘virtual classroom’.

Anyone who has used ‘Disscusion Forums’ on the internet would find online courses and the ‘virtual classroom’ rather similar to online learning.

Online Degrees

With the ever increasing popularity of online courses offered by various colleges and universities I put together some facts and a list of what to look out for when selecting an online course.

Online courses are different from home study and distance learning in that an online course introduces the concept of a ‘virtual classroom’, where students interact with other students taking the same course. Home study and distance learning are usually packages with books and sometimes tapes where the student works alone.

What I have written here are general questions and answers about online courses or online degrees.
